Way back when, before flat-screen TVs and DVDs, people watched movies under the starry sky at drive-ins. One of them was located in Ladysmith, in fact.

In an effort to bring back the sense of community that outdoor movies provided, the Tingler Insurance agency is sponsoring a free six-movie series on Saturday nights this summer.

The first movie, “Rio,” will be shown Saturday, May 30, on a big screen on the ballfield/track beside the old Ladysmith Elementary/Diversified Learning Center (near the Dollar General and Union Bank) in Ladysmith. Gates open at 7 p.m. for people to set up, with the movie to start when it grows dark enough.

Participants are urged to bring their own blankets and chairs. The Caroline High School band will have concessions. You can find information on the six-movie series on Facebook (Tingler Insurance), on the Facebook event page (Movie Nights by Tingler Insurance), and at www.tinglerinsurance.net.

“This is the first year we have tried this,” said Micky Tingler.  “We hope it gains traction so we can make it an annual event series.”

This summer’s family-friendly movie schedule is May 30, “Rio”; June 13, “Africa Screams”; June 27, “Madagascar”; July 11, “The Road to Bali”; July 25, “How to Train Your Dragon”; and Aug. 8, “The Flying Deuces.”

“Since it is outdoors, inclement weather may force cancellation of particular nights.  We will post notifications on Facebook and on our website,” Tingler said.

“We are scheduling concessions to be available for purchase, too.  We are working hard to set up community partners for concessions that can benefit from the fundraising. We are still in need of partners.

“The Caroline High band has agreed to host concessions for at least our first night, May 30, as part of their efforts to buy new marching uniforms. We ask that all concession partners have at least popcorn and drinks available. The band will have, at minimum, popcorn, drinks, and icy pops.  Tingler Insurance will provide water.”

No alcohol is allowed, and all minors must be accompanied by their parent or guardian for safety. Carpooling is encouraged to ensure adequate parking!
