Just a few more days remain to buy tickets for this year’s From the Rappahannock, For the Rappahannock featuring Oysters for Life. Come join Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR) and Oyster Company of Virginia (OCVA) in Topping, Virginia, for an afternoon of oysters, wine, beer, and live acoustic music. This event runs 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 14.
FOR and OCVA work together to bring you a unique way to give back to the Rappahannock River and the Chesapeake Bay with their Oysters for Life event. Oysters for Life sponsors receive two dozen oysters annually for ten years with a $175 purchase. For $275, members receive two dozen oysters for life.
“It really is the gift that keeps on giving, and it is perfect for the holidays. Oysters For Life gives its members a chance to help save the bay, its fragile ecosystem, and the wildlife that depends on it,” said Tolar Nolley, founder of OCVA. “Additionally, you’ll be supporting local watermen and helping to bring back the Virginia oyster.” By sponsoring, members support the health of the river, the watermen and their families, and they can share their oysters with friends and family.
“The sponsorship helps buy the initial seed oysters and the cages for growing the oysters to harvest size,” Nolley said. “This paves the way for a waterman’s sustainable transition from hunter-gatherer to aquaculture farmer.”
Nolley lives, breathes, and eats Crassostrea Virginica, the East Coast’s natural oyster. He’ll be talking to attendees about the latest information regarding conservation efforts along the Rappahannock River and the comeback of the Virginia oyster.
FOR is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy group that works to protect the Rappahannock from its source in the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Chesapeake Bay.
Tickets are $30 per single and $50 per pair and available online. For more info log onto www.riverfriends.org or call (540) 373-3448, ext. 117
