High seas may have been no impediment to pirates, but high creeks and rivers have cramped Port Royal’s 3rd Annual Charter Day, which has been rescheduled to Sunday, Oct. 11, from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“Safety first,” said Mayor Nancy Long Friday morning, as a storm expected by the latest forecasts to produce between 4 and 6 inches of rain by Sunday evening swept into the region.
The pirate-themed Charter Day was initially scheduled for Saturday Oct. 3.
Despite the eight-day delay, Long said the event “is pretty much going to be the same.”
Both Capt. Jaxx Parrow and Blackbeard’s Crew have confirmed they will appear at the Oct. 11 Charter Day, as will Gary Lee Tolley and Friends Band and a number of the vendors.
Long said that although Port Royal’s Festival Committee had attempted to find another Saturday in October that would accommodate Charter Day, the high number of celebrations elsewhere in the region during the month, including Bowling Green’s Harvest Festival, the King George Fall Festival and the Frog Level Volunteer Fire Department Fall Festival, had stymied them.
Sunday was the solution, with the times of the event shifted to prevent a conflict with religious services.
“Maybe people will come to church and then have a family day,” said Long
