The Caroline High School varsity football team closed out its season on Friday, Nov. 4 in a 50-6 loss to host, Courtland High School.
Both teams had a chance to get in the playoffs if they won, so a victory was significant.
For the 2016 season, both teams had rough starts, and both made improvements as the year went on.
Caroline ended the season with a 2-8 record, the best since 2013, and the first victories since then.
Courtland came back strong with a 5-5 record that belied its 4-1 play for the second half of the season.
Friday’s game was supposed to have been a lot closer than what actually transpired.
Caroline, who had improved greatly since September, was coming off of its second win of the season, triumphing over Spotsylvania. With momentum on the Cavaliers’ side, Caroline fans were hoping their team would give the Courtland Cougars a dogfight to close out the 2016 season.
For the first two series, Caroline looked like it was ready to rumble––making large gains using its running game.
The Cougars put up a stalwart defense to shut down the Cavaliers and Caroline punted every series of the first half, except the last one. Courtland came out playing strong and physical on both sides of the ball.
