Spencer stepping down as chief prosecutor

Caroline County Commonwealth’s Attorney Tony Spencer announced last week that he is not running for re-election, thus ending what will be an eight-year stint as the county’s chief prosecutor.

In 2007, Spencer unseated incumbent Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Latney, who had held the office for 29 years without a significant challenger. The voters returned Spencer to office for another four-year term in 2011.

Although he appeared on the stage as a candidate at an event June 6 in the backyard of Bowling Green District Supervisor Jeff Sili, Spencer announced on the evening of June 9 (just past the CP’s weekly deadline) that he was no longer running.

In his short speech June 6, Spencer alluded to having faced a number of personal and professional challenges during his second term in office. In a prepared statement, Spencer elaborated on this.

“In the last 2½ years, I have lost both my parents after long illnesses, and I have gained a child, our son, Charlie, who will be three in November. Our daughter, Josie, will turn eight next month.

“Josie and Charlie will not be young for long, and I will not be around forever. Spending time with my children and my wife, Danielle, is what is most important to me now.

“For the past two years, Danielle and I have been discussing whether I should run for a third term as our County’s Commonwealth’s Attorney. On the one hand, I wanted a less demanding job so that…
