While many Caroline residents were in church Sunday morning, Nov. 22, a splayfoot robber, whose feet turn outward, entered the Verizon Wireless Center in Ladysmith with pistol in hand.

The store is located in the Ladysmith shopping center at 17495 Jefferson Davis Highway.

There was only one employee present when the robber entered; the time was 11:57 a.m. The employee, who asked to not be identified, said the robber stuck the pistol in his back and directed him to the backroom where he took 15 phones costing up to $650 each. The robber also left the store with $1,900 in cash.

“It was maybe a 9 millimeter,” the employee said of the gun.

He noted that the robber, a Caucasian male, had an unusual walk, his feet turning outward, or splayfoot. He was about five-foot-six, the employee said, wearing a dark motorcycle helmet, glasses, a dark jacket and blue jeans.

None of the store’s six surveillance cameras captured an image of the robber’s face.

Citizens with information or tips are asked to immediately call Investigator Brandon Martin at the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office at (804) 633-5400. They can also make an anonymous tip on the Anonymous Tip Line at (804) 633-1133.
