CHS 7, Courtland 6
On Tuesday, the Courtland Cougars came to Milford for a knock-down drag-out fight with Caroline. After three innings the game was tied 0-0, and although Caroline had a 2-1 advantage after four complete, it was not until the sixth inning that the action really started. The Cavaliers faced a 2-2 tie going into the bottom of the sixth, when they broke the game open with four runs. Not to be outdone, Courtland came back in the top of the seventh with four runs of their own to tie the game at 6-6. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Caroline scored the go-ahead run to win 7-6.
The seventh inning, besides giving spectators a nail-biter experience, showed how the Lady Cavs could take advantage of situations. The winning run by Kayleigh Buchanan was set up by Coach Greg Trainum’s use of small-ball play. Buchanan reached first base on an error by the Courtland third baseman. She was then moved over to second by a SAC bunt by Bria Malloy, followed by a double by Cassandra Cooper that allowed Buchanan to score the winning run.
For Caroline, Courtney Wright was awarded the win, striking out two and walking three after seven innings. Wright was charged with eight hits and five of six runs earned. Allison Morrow maintained her reign behind the plate scoring two put outs. At the plate, Morrow led the Cavalier offense, batting 3-3 (two doubles), one run, a walk and three RBI. Summer Simulcik was 1-3, scoring one run and three stolen bases. Hailey Queen went 1-2 for a triple, with one run and one RBI.
Vicki Warner was charged with the loss, pitching the entire game and striking out ten while walking only four. She allowed six hits and four of seven runs earned. Warner was backed up by catcher Allison Mitchell.
CHS 11, J.M. 1
Thursday, the Cavaliers had their way twice with the James Monroe Yellow Jackets in a doubleheader in which each game was limited to five innings. The first game, an 11-1 Cavalier victory, was called because of the 10-run rule after four innings. Caroline put the game away in the second inning, scoring seven runs and adding four insurance runs in the fourth to make the score 11-1. James Monroe was only able to add one run to the final score in the top of the fourth.
Courtney Wright was again awarded the win for the game, pitching a complete game, striking out two and walking one while allowing only one run. Allison Morrow took her position behind the plate. A number of Cavaliers led the offense, most notably Hailey Queen, hitting 3-3 (two doubles) and scoring two runs and an RBI. Morrow nailed a double in three trips to the plate and scored a run.
Lindsey Hoberman absorbed the loss for the Yellow Jackets and was charged with eight hits and 11 runs (six of which were earned). She struck out one and walked two. Courtney Walcott was catching for Hoberman.
After the first game, Courtney Wright, the only senior on the team, was accompanied by her mother and recognized for her contribution to Caroline High School athletics. This fall she will attend James Madison University, where she will begin her studies to become a nurse.
CHS 9, J.M. 1
James Monroe was the home team for the nightcap, but the visiting Caroline Cavaliers showed no mercy, swatting the Yellow Jackets to the tune of 9-1. Monroe was allowed to score one run in the second, but no more, whereas Caroline was able to score in four out of five innings. Hailey Queen worked the mound for the first time in several weeks as she has been recovering from an injury.
Monroe’s only real offensive threat came in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting runners on first and second. Queen was able to strike out the next two batters, but a Cavalier error loaded the bases. The game ended when a JM batter hit a ball to Cierra Cooper on first ,who made an unassisted out.
Queen, who pitched the entire game, was awarded the win, striking out five and allowing only one hit and one run. Queen ruled the Cavalier offense, 2-3, with two runs and two RBI. Catcher Allison Morrow was 2-3 (one double), scoring two runs. Courtney Wright was also hot at the plate, going 2-3 (one double) and one run. Wright accumulated two stolen bases and one RBI.
Lindsey Hoberman was charged with the loss as she piled up the stats to include nine runs and nine hits while striking out three. Hoberman was backed up behind the plate by Courtney Walcott.
