United Airlines has unveiled a set of MileagePlus changes that keep elite thresholds steady for 2026 while reshaping how upgrades work. The announcements touch award upgrades, PlusPoints earning and redemption, and access to Polaris saver seats.
Premier qualification: no surprises for 2026
United will maintain the same criteria for reaching Premier status next year. There are no increases to the flight or spending thresholds that determine elite tiers.

- Premier Silver: 15 Premier qualifying flights + 5,000 PQPs, or 6,000 PQPs
- Premier Gold: 30 PQFs + 10,000 PQPs, or 12,000 PQPs
- Premier Platinum: 45 PQFs + 15,000 PQPs, or 18,000 PQPs
- Premier 1K: 60 PQFs + 22,000 PQPs, or 28,000 PQPs
Partner airline travel counts toward status, but United requires at least four flights on its own metal to qualify.
PQP head start for returning elites
Members who hold Premier status at year-end will receive the same PQP boost into 2026 that United offered in 2025.
Upgrades on award tickets become more accessible
One of the most tangible changes affects travelers using miles. Beginning Feb. 1, 2026, United will permit upgrades on award tickets for all Premier members.
This aligns the upgrade experience for paid and award bookings. It covers:
- Complimentary upgrades for eligible Premier elites
- Redemptions using PlusPoints
In short: if you book a flight with MileagePlus miles, you can now be considered for the same upgrade benefits as cash-paying passengers.
How PlusPoints earning will evolve
PlusPoints remain the special upgrade currency for Premier Platinum and Premier 1K members. United announced moves to expand ways to collect those credits.
Credit card spending adds PlusPoints for 1K members
Starting Jan. 1, 2026, Premier 1K members can earn additional PlusPoints through qualifying spend on cobranded United credit cards.
Cardholders already earn PQPs toward status. This update lets top-tier elites convert some card activity into upgrade currency.
Note: card-based limits on PQP and PlusPoints earnings still apply.
PlusPoints redemption goes dynamic in 2027
The most consequential change affects how many PlusPoints you need to upgrade. United will move PlusPoints redemptions to dynamic pricing in February 2027.
Under the new model, costs will vary by:
- Route and cabin
- Travel date and seasonality
- Demand and seat availability
What that means: some upgrades may require fewer PlusPoints, many will remain similar, and some will become pricier during peak periods.
United frames the shift as market-driven pricing rather than an across-the-board devaluation. Travelers should expect higher PlusPoints requirements for summer, holidays, and high-demand routes.
More Polaris saver award seats for cardholders and elites
United is widening access to Polaris saver awards for certain MileagePlus members and Chase cardholders.
If you are logged into an eligible MileagePlus account or hold a qualifying United cobranded card, you may see increased availability for lower-cost business-class awards.
Tip: Always search for award space while signed into the account tied to your elite status or the card you use most.
What to watch next in MileagePlus
United executives have hinted at broader MileagePlus changes in the coming months. The rollout of award-upgrade eligibility and dynamic PlusPoints are likely precursors to larger program shifts.
- Keep an eye on how dynamic pricing affects upgrade strategy.
- Track new PlusPoints earning opportunities via credit cards.
- Search award space logged in as a Premier member or cardholder for the best chances at Polaris seats.
