Caroline High School’s boys varsity basketball team dropped two games last week, one to Patrick Henry 56-46 last Friday and one to Henrico 101-84 on Thursday, which brought their record to 1-4 for the season.
In both games, the Cavaliers appeared to run out of steam in the fourth quarter.
Vs. Patrick Henry
Against Patrick Henry, a game with the lead going back and forth, the third quarter closed out with Caroline ahead 39-36.
However, in the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers scored only seven points while Patrick Henry poured out 20 to win with a 10-point margin 56-46.
Caroline was cold from both the floor and from the charity stripe. High scorer on the night was Darius Young with nine points followed by Devin Carey, eight points, and Mark Loving with seven. From the free throw line, the Cavaliers were 7-15, or less than 50 percent.
Vs. Henrico
Friday’s game came after a spectacular effort by the Cavaliers even though they were on the losing end. The question remains, where is the consistency in the Cavalier game? Granted, it is the beginning of the season, but there is work that needs to be done. On paper they are one of the most balanced teams to represent Caroline High School in years, but the chemistry has to be there.
Last Thursday, Caroline hosted Henrico in a game that was much closer than the score indicated. Until midway through the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers played strong against a fast-paced Henrico Warriors basketball team, scoring more points against Henrico than most teams are able. With their best effort this season, it appeared Caroline had regained the chemistry they displayed against Midlothian.
Darius Young showed what everyone who has watched him knew he could do. He scored with his signature three-point shot (five completed) and worked the ball into the basket. Young finished the night with a season-high 27 points.
Junior guard Vondell Green followed with 16, just ahead of AJ Derricot with 15. Shooting 21-28 from the free-throw line, Caroline showed Henrico they were ready to play in all situations during the game.
This week the Cavaliers were scheduled to visit Spotsylvania High School on Tuesday and host the visiting Foxes of King George on Friday. The Cavaliers are off for Christmas break until December 27 when they play Louisa County at home.
