Joan C. Cecil

Joan C. Cecil, 59, of Bowling Green, died at her home Oct. 27.

Survivors include her husband, Richard T. Cecil; her mother, Alma Collawn of Bowling Green; her brother, Richard Collawn Jr. of Bowling Green; two nieces, Brooke Collawn and Angie Deloach; and three nephews, Richard J. Collawn and Dougie and Johnny Carter.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Ned Carter; a nephew, Ned Douglas Carter; and her grandmother, Morrie Martin

A funeral service was held Oct. 29 at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green. Burial followed at Mt. Hermon Church cemetery in Shumansville.

Manon Al Ferguson

Manon Al Ferguson, 74, entered into eternal rest Oct. 30 at Retreat Hospital in Richmond.

He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted family: one daughter, Jeanette Lee Ferguson-Butler; two sons, Maurice Ferguson and Andree Ferguson; one brother, Jerry Ferguson; one sister, Joyce Cox; two daughters-in-law; three sisters-in-law; nine grandchildren; one uncle and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. today and at 11 a.m. Friday at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home, 16476 Richmond Turnpike, Bowling Green.

A service will be at noon Friday at Second Baptist Church, 26725 Ruther Glen Road, Ruther Glen, with Rev. Dr. Arthur N. Werts delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Carol B. Gutierrez

Carol B. Gutierrez, 68 of Port Royal died Oct. 31.

Survivors include her husband, Jose Gutierrez; four children, Jeffrey Samuels, Richard Samuels, Jody Miller and Terra Samuels; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Toni Mitchell.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green.

Anna Cecilia Klimek

Anna Cecilia Klimek, 96, a long-time resident of Woodford, died Oct. 26.

Born March 20, 1914 in Rockaway, N.J., she was brought to Woodford when she was three weeks old. She was the daughter of Susanna Evanchak Klimek Knapik and Michael John Klimek and lived most of her life on the farm her parents had bought and cleared.

Ms. Klimek graduated from Mica High School and worked at nearly every job they had at the Sylvania Plant (which later became American Viscose and finally FMC) in Fredericksburg.

A member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Roman Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, she was known for her tireless curiosity, self-sufficiency and independent spirit and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include two nieces, Danielle Beauchamp and her husband, Michael Barrett, and Mary Anne Beauchamp of Alexandria; a nephew, Robert Klimek and his wife, Nancy, of Pearl River, New York; a great-niece, Elizabeth Barrett of Alexandria; two great-nephews, Christopher Klimek and Andrew Klimek of Pearl River, New York. She also leaves behind the children of her step-father, John Knapik: Mildred Messmer of Interlaken, N.Y. and her children and Lorraine Connary of Hardy, Va. and her children.

Ms. Klimek was preceded in death by her sister, Veronica Beauchamp, and her brother, Michael Klimek.

A funeral mass was held Oct. 28 at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green with Father Bjorn Lundberg officiating. Burial followed at St. MaryÕs Catholic Church cemetery in Woodford.

Owen Pickett

Owen Pickett, dies at 80, a former Democratic member of Congress from Virginia Beach who spent part of his youth in Caroline County and developed the Pendleton community in Caroline, has died at the age of 80.

Pickett, an attorney and a certified public accountant, represented the 2nd District from 1987 to 2001 and served on the Housed Armed Services Committee. He was a member of the stateÕs House of Delegates from 1972-1986, serving on the House Appropriations Committee.

A lifelong Democrat, Pickett was chairman of the Virginia Democratic Party from 1980-1982. He retired from elected office when he was 70.

Pickett had real estate holdings throughout Virginia. He began assembling property in Caroline County in the 1950s and eventually developed Pendleton, a 1,250-acre planned unit community near Ladysmith that includes an 18-hold championship golf course.

Pickett was born in Richmond, the youngest of three children, and spent his childhood and adolescent years in rural Caroline and Hanover counties.

His father died when he was young, and he worked at various jobs during the Great Depression and World War II to help support his family. He worked mostly on farms, but he also found work with the railroad that transported troops through the region to their military assignments.

Pickett earned a bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech and a law degree from the University of Richmond. He was admitted to the state bar in 1955 and began practicing in Richmond.
